How to Save Money Installing Your Own Sprinkler System

how to install a sprinkler systemI installed my sprinkler systems this year, and it was really easy to do! I live in Idaho, and temperatures can get up to 115°F in the middle of the summer. Last year, I had a small part of my lawn die because it did not get an adequate amount of watering during the time of year where the temperature was insanely hot (we were on vacation). I decided that I have to install a sprinkler system for my lawn this year, and this is how I did it

The first thing I did is, I went to the home improvement store and I bought a battery-powered timer. Battery powered-timers actually come a long way in the last 10 years. You can have up to two stations on a battery-powered timer. My back lawn is about 2,000 ft.², and I use one station for my entire lawn, but I have a very good water pressure. If you’re water pressure is higher than 2.5 gallons of water per minute, then you can probably do the same thing. If your water pressure is less than 2 gallons per minute, you’re going to need to have two different stations to cover 2,000 ft.².

This particular timer costs around $30 to $50 depending on the kind of timer that you want. I have my timer set to go off for 15 minutes every 12 hours. If you want to keep your hose attached, get a splitter. You can still use one and for your hose, and one  for your sprinkler system.

More Saving Tips

Aside from buying a timer, you’re going to want to buy some poly plastic tubing. Last year, my wife used plastic tubing to make hula hoops for all of my children. I had just enough left over to use for my sprinkler lines. Then, you’re going to want to get adapters and attachments so that you can attach your sprinkler lines to your main line. If you want to do a lot of digging, you can use the smaller sprinkler heads, and you should be up to cover the whole area of your lawn. I decided to spend a bit of money on larger sprinkler heads ($15-$20 each) so that I wouldn’t have to spend as much time digging trenches. Currently, I am using to $20 sprinkler heads to cover my entire lawn.

sprinkler system for lawnsWhen you are gardening, it might be a great idea for you to install a soaker hose or drip line. You can use a sprinkler timer, to make sure that you get the right amount of water to your lawn. What you want to do is you want to use a regular hose, to get watered to where your garden starts, and that you want to use a soaker hose, or a drip line, to make sure that your plants get plenty of water. The advantage of using a soaker hose is that you don’t need to use as much water to give water to your plants. The disadvantage of soaker hose is that sometimes they get blocked, and then they have to be cleaned out or replaced. I was able to install a very dependable sprinkler system for my entire back yard and garden for less than $150.

The price to hire a professional contractor to come out and do the work for me, would have probably been closer to $1,000.
